English Week in Wales

Alderman Davies Church in Wales Primary School celebrate English Week! We were inspired by our visit to Bowes Hutchinson Primary School and we decided to develop our courtyard into our Garden of Dreams. We reflected on our class work and displayed our values in different ways around the school. Please click on the link below to share our experiences.

English Week in Norway

Our English week was arranged in Week 21. What a lucky strike! After months of unusual cold and wet weather, the sun finally came up- and gave us warm summer temperatures for all our activities.

As usual in our Activity weeks, all children and staff at school and nursery take part. The children were divided into 4 groups with mixed ages. The names of the groups this time were: Union Jack, Queen Elizabeth, Big Ben and Barnard Castle.

The activities are all inspired from our visit to Bowes School and Wingate, and the main themes were Sports, Cooking, Arts& Crafts and Secret Garden ( Nature and Science).

Theme 1: Secret Garden

Our inspiration was the real Secret Garden in England,  a wonderful teaching facility we really loved at Bowes School. We tried to recreate some of the magic in our English Week.

In the secret garden you had 4 activities. The first part was in our "Woodpecker logde"
Activity 1.In the lodge you could learn about and listen to birds.

Activity 2: In the creeps and crawlers track you could feel and observe our smallest creeps from the pond.

Activity 3: In the path of the unknown you went a nature trail with no vision. - Very scary, I what if I get harmed, Emil (13) said. But he got through it safely!

Activity 4: Sences tree. On this post we found a magical tree. It was full of strange bags containing mystic things. The task was to guess what the content was. Some of the bags had to be touched, others had to be smelled. Exciting, and a bit difficult. The children worked together and collaborated perfectly. The older helped the youngest.

Theme 2: Cooking.

Of course we made food which is connected to England. Many small chefs were on duty, and made a great meal each group shared at the end of this actitvity.

Dish 1: Outdoor we made toast. It smelled wonderfully, and it was hard waiting for the meal to be served..

While waiting for turn we played a lotto game learning new English words for different food. The oldest read for the youngest and everyone were encouraged to try to pronounce the new words.

Dish 2: In the kitchen these 2 girls prepared tea with milk. Even though Norway is more of a coffee-contry, tea is not that strange for Norwegians. Still, drinking it with milk was new to most of the pupils.

However, most children were quite happy with the new taste! Like Sander: - I love it!

Dish 3: Even more appreciated were the CHIPS! We have erperienced that fries are served with most dishes in England, and that the chips are thicker and bigger than back home.  One activity was to chop potatoes into chips, which were fried outdoors.

Sigrid makes sure nothing gets burned.

Dish 4: The last but not least dish was scones. The wonderful scent filled the building as the results came out of the oven. Yummy.

Theme 3: Arts and Crafts

When visiting  Bowes school we saw the pupils work with designing Tea Cups. All children at Torvmyrane have now made their own special paper tea cup, so a lot of creative patterns are on display in our hallway.

A good thing with activity weeks is working cross age groups. Here Alexander is lucky to  be  taught by his own nanna, Jane.

Teacher Inger brought some inspiration from her kitchen cupboard.....

Proud William eager to show his lovely work. Well done!

Theme 4: Sports

Activity 1: Playing English games and speaking English.
On one station we played different English games, like Mr Crocodille . Here the children and staff were chasing eachother. You had to wear a certain colour to get safely across the river. Of course, everyone had to speak English when shouting out messages.

This time Leonard decided PURPLE was the only colour that could save you.
OR very fast running1

Bonding cross ages. Big girls looking after the little ones. A good day for both, and a HUGE reasons to for doing these weeks.

Activity 2: Football
"Everybody" loves football.... At least, everyone who loves football knows how big this sport is in UK. Many Norwegian football lovers have English teams they support  just as passionately as they support their Norwegian  team..

So everyone played football this week!

Activity 3: Singing games

The staff on this post must really love singing! They sang 3 songs  with 6 different groups, that makes 18 songs a day for a week! Roumor has it that one of them lost the voice already the first day, and had to mime the rest of the week.

First we played singing games which we know from Norwegian Language, like Mr Sevenman is dancing. In Norwegian this is called  "Per Sjuspring"

Here we play "London Bridge is falling"

"Hokey Cokey" is also the same song that we sing in Norwegian, then it is called "Buggi, buggi"

An inspiring and fun week is over, 15 activities have taught us a ot about England. Now we'll keep up the work in the classes. Thank you, Bowes, for the inspiration!
